Even on LinkedIn, you can still build your own tribe and real, meaningful connections, without joining a boost programme. But it is becoming more and more difficult.
I love your writing, Veronica—so real, so authentic, and FUNNY. Funny because it's real.
I dipped my big toe into the boost thing once, and that was it. It didn't "fit" in all the ways you said.
I don't write to create business. I write to contribute. If my contribution is worth something, it will spread organically. Same with my coaching. I've never done an ad for coaching before. Not once. All word of mouth. Because it's worthwhile. That's also why I've been so late to social media--as I haven't worked digitally (until Covid), it was irrelevant. My work has spread all on its own because it's transformational.
Now that I'm contributing through writing more, I'm more interested in "increasing my database" as a way to contribute.
But not through boosts. That's not for me.
I love reading your work, your thinking. Thank you.
In love with this article, all of it. I giggled with the botox and Pavlos’s dogs references, because it is so true! I joined some of these programs and just as you said, it started to feel off after a bit. And I just stopped. I didn’t enjoy people commenting on my notes as some sort of obligation to “support each other”, and equally I didn’t want to comment on things that didn’t spark my interest. I had an intuition about this and followed it. This article really affirms what I felt and my experience with this. Thank you Veronica.
Hi Veronica, your post really resonated with me. It seems there's a real need for getting attention and be seen, even at the cost of substance. I'm curious, in your case, what made you stay on the path of "more resistance", more authentic path? (looks like your values are well grounded by the fact that you're sharing this)
Thank you and I'm so glad to hear that. Welcome to the resistance movement.
Tbh, I think it has to do with values and sticking to what feels right to you. I'm a triathlete and I appreciate the effort and the hard work behind every rep and every workout. I wouldn't want to get results I didn't work for. I think something similar happens in the digital world - but it's less sweaty, lol.
I hear you, Anima. It's easy to feel anxious when you see that everyone is growing that way but I believe in organic and genuine growth. No artificial boost.
Wow, I opened this email and couldn't stop reading 🙃. I love these new insights you give... all off the typical pathway, the unfiltered perspective. I am so sick of all these Boost thing. I really miss the time when I started my blog and was writing just to help my audience, no big chatter around the growth and creator ego. I absolutely enjoy every word you write and yes, I only subscribe to and recommend what I find valuable and love without expecting anything in exchange. Because when we do it with generosity it will come back 💜😊
I know exactly what you are talking about and I feel the same way. I love genuinely helping people so that they can grow their wings and fly high.
It always feels robotic and fabricated when the support is conditioned. I often receive invites to recommend for recommend and it's really not the way I want to grow.
And totally agree: what goes around comes around so give first and have an abundance mindset. It will pay off.
Engagement pods typically have one purpose: to fake the algorithm. On LinkedIn they go against the terms of service ans can lead to being blocked. I observe it also on Substack.
Another thing is when people know and like each other and share between themselves without expectation of return.
Hi Gunnar, wow, I had no idea re Linkedin as there are so many of them.
Spot on: if you support other people because you genuinely enjoy their content without expectating a like or follow it's another story. Sadly, what I see these days is symetrical reciprocity.
Some of those engagement pods with big creators are paid. Not good.
And here on Substack I also know engagement pods, often connected with courses as a kind of „community“.
I prefer to build my own tribe and support those I know, like and trust and for that particular piece of content in that moment - not due to a duty I have to follow.

Love the metaphor, Veronica!
You are right, Jeff, it is possible but you also see what's going on for many and it's a shame because it distorts the essence of the platform.
I still loving having real conversations there with actual people and not their AI bots...

Appreciate this.

I hear you Alexandra, because that's exactly how I felt when I first joined the "connection party."
It's good to experience it first hand and know what it's like but I definitely prefer to grow in an organic and honest way without forced reciprocity.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, I had a blast writing it too!
Thank you!

This is the best metaphor I've ever heard for this! 👏
Thank you!
It's exactly the way I visualize it and I'm glad it landed for you too.
I have been having doubt about those boost chats and notes. They induce stress to me. There are very few that I like, enjoy and learn from those.
Great article and I learnt few things.

Thank you for your kind comments!

Sisters in mind :)
